The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District is committed to implementing a plan for September reopening of its more than 250 schools which will maximize the amount of in-class instruction for all students, within the parameters set by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) and public health authorities.

Although plans for September continue to evolve, members of the public/parent community may review the resources below to help address questions or concerns. Please note information on this website will be updated regularly to reflect current information available.

Materials for Schools and Families
Since the onset of the public health emergency, the District has engaged in frequent discussions with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association (NLTA), in addition to public health officials and the Department of Health and Community Services. Additional consultations have focused on discussions with representatives of NAPE and CUPE, school administrators (as individual school community leaders); the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of School Councils, and individual school council chairs and parent representatives throughout the province. Discussions have also been held with the NLTA Special Interest Councils and public input and feedback was also accepted through email correspondence. In addition, a selection of students from Grades 7-12 were invited to participate in consultations to provide their input and voice into the planning process. All stakeholders provided valuable input and feedback in our plan and in our continued planning moving forward.

  • ThoughtExchange
The District used the online consultation tool ThoughtExchange to engage with administrators and school council representatives. ThoughtExchange enables participants to provide as many responses as they like to a question, explain each response (to allow others to determine if they agree), and also rate the thoughts of other participants. ThoughtExchange keeps confidential who shared each thought and who assigned what ratings. More information on ThoughtExchange is available here.

  • Families of Schools Meetings
The District hosted a province-wide virtual webinar with representatives of school councils on June 17, 2020, which was facilitated through ThoughtExchange. This initial input provided some robust data, which was shared with participants in 14 separate follow-up Q&A sessions, involving all Families of Schools, held June 22-26, 2020. A presentation provided participants with a summary of the initial ThoughtExchange results, and helped guide follow-up discussion.

  • School Administrator Meeting
The District hosted a meeting with administrators of schools across the province on June 18, 2020. The Discussion was facilitated by ThoughtExchange and the input provided has assisted staff in preparing September reopening plans and options.

  • Sample of Student Voice Consultation
The District requested administrators of all Grades 7 to 12 schools in the province to invite a few students from each school to participate in a virtual meeting with NLESD's CEO/Director of Education Tony Stack. On July 27, more than 100 students took part in the discussion and provided their input into the September reopening planning process.
