The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District is extending congratulations to all students who competed at the recent Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Intermediate Challenge and F.I.R.S.T. Lego League Robotics Competition held in St. John's. The event, which took place November 4th, saw more than 350 junior high school students from 28 schools throughout the province compete in eighteen different technology, trade and employability areas for a chance at a medal. A large number of the gold medal winners will now move on to compete in the Skills Canada Provincial Competition in March, 2019.

The Annual General Meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District was held at the District Conference Centre, 40 Strawberry Marsh Road, on Sunday October 21, 2018. As required by the Board bylaws, trustees voted for the role of Chair and Vice-Chair of the Board, as well as the Executive Committee of the Board.

The Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board of Trustee responded today to information being shared by the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA) on the subject of the allocation of student assistant hours.
"While we appreciate the NLTA’s advocacy role in seeking additional classroom supports, it is important to note that the District is fully funded by the Provincial Government and deploys available student assistant resources, according to its budget, on a priority basis throughout more than 250 schools in the province," said Chair Goronwy Price. "Furthermore, students with identified needs also avail of multiple supports within the school environment - including support from the classroom teacher, administration, Instructional Resource Teachers, educational psychologists, guidance counsellors, speech-language pathologists, itinerant teachers with specialized training and expertise in a wide range of exceptionalities, and more."

Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board, Goronwy Price, and Director of Education/CEO Tony Stack will hold a media availability Wednesday, September 12 to respond to the Auditor General’s report into purchasing activities at the District.

Before the first day at most schools across the province, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District provided seven (7) school communities with details on plans to manage a water issue impacting areas of St. John's serviced by the Petty Harbour Long Pond water supply. The Newfoundland and Labrador Education Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2017-18 Scholarship Awards program. A total of 27 students from schools throughout the province were selected from among more than 120 applications.

The Board of Trustees of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District held a public meeting on Saturday, August 11 to discuss a number of items in preparation for the upcoming school year. The meeting, held at the District Conference Centre in St. John’s, was broadcast live on the District website.
Trustees were pleased to note the new Teacher and Learning Assistant (TLA) positions have been established in anticipation of the upcoming school year. The TLA positions are a result of a recommendation made by the Premier’s Task Force on Improving Educational Outcomes, and the subsequent Education Action Plan, released by the Provincial Government in July. In the first phase of implementation, 53 TLAs will begin working with students this September in select District schools.

After an impressive stint showcasing their skills in Edmonton, Alberta, Team Newfoundland and Labrador are heading back to our province after successfully competiting in the 24th Annual Skills Canada National Competition. The team consisted of some 46 individuals, many of whom attend junior highs and/or high schools across the province, competiting in some 40 different skills areas. When the dust settled and the competition completed, Team NL has brought home 14 national medals in some 12 different skills areas. These include:

The French Language Summer Program is a three week immersion program designed to build an experiential bridge as your child moves from the Elementary French Program to the Intermediate French Immersion Program. Click the attachment below for more details.
Registration for Summer School 2018 will take place on Tuesday July 3rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at O’Donel High School and Leary’s Brook Junior High. Classes are tentatively scheduled to begin on Thursday July 5th, 2018 and will run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Classes finish on Wednesday August 1st, 2018. There will be a 15 minute recess break each day. No holidays will be observed. Students will not be permitted to register after Monday July 9th , 2018. See attached below for more details.
As a result of construction in the area of Indian Pond Road in Seal Cove, Conception Bay South, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, in consultation with the Town of Conception Bay South, has instituted temporary busing measures in the area. Effective Wednesday, May 23, the bus route will begin at the temporary turn around (directly across from 106 Indian Pond Road) and will proceed along Indian Pond Road (Seal Cove Road) to school. These changes impact Upper Gullies Elementary, Frank Roberts Junior High and Queen Elizabeth High School. Amalgamated Academy in Bay Roberts will host the Avalon Regional Heritage Fair next week. The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District’s Lessons from Our Past Shaping Our Future will get underway on Friday, May 4th, with a public viewing available Saturday, May 5th from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Members of the general public are encouraged to come out and see some impressive projects researched and created by students throughout the Avalon Region. A full schedule for the Avalon Regional Heritage Fair can be found attached.
Waterford Valley High hosted the 2018 Science and Technology Fair for the early April weekend event, organizing what was, by all accounts, a great weekend of discovery. Students attended tours offered from several departments and research facilities at Memorial University and the Ocean Sciences Centre in Logy Bay, followed by initial judging of their projects by some of the more than 80 judges including professors, instructors and graduate students at Memorial.
During the ceremony six students were selected to represent Eastern Newfoundland at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa, this coming in May and four of those students are from the NLESD. The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District will be offering a 48 hour Public Exam Preparation Program (Night School) from April 17 to June 7, 2018. This program will be offered for Math 3201 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (7:00 pm to 10:00 pm) at Gonzaga High School, Smithville Crescent, St. John’s. See more information attached below.

A number of junior high and high school students joined their post-secondary counterparts recently at the Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Skilled Career Day and 21st Annual Skills Canada Provincial Competition, held in St. John's. Competiting in either secondary or post secondary categories, students had the opportunity to showcase their skills in a various different categories. Participants highlighted how this event now only allowed them to further develop their interests in particular subject areas but interact and discuss their interests with like-minded individuals.
In addition to numerous honours for individual and group competitions, the following schools were highlighted as the Top Placing Schools in the Secondary School category:
- 1st Place - Holy Spirit High School
- 2nd Place - Ascension Collegiate
- 3rd Place - Queen Elizabeth Regional High School
The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District congratulates all competitors, particuarly those who have achieved Gold and will join Team Newfoundland and Labrador as they travel to Edmonton, Alberta in June to participate in the 24th Annual Skills Canada National Competition.

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District will be holding public information sessions in the coming weeks for families interested in learning about the Early French Immersion (EFI) program. These sessions are for parents and guardians considering registering for EFI for the 2019-2020 school year.

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District will be offering a 48 hour Public Exam Preparation Program (Night School) from February to June 2018. This program will be offered on Tuesday (Math and English) or Thursday (Science and Social Studies) evenings (7:00 pm to 10:00 pm) at Gonzaga High School, Smithville Crescent, St. John’s. There will be no classes over Easter week and any sessions missed due to inclement weather will be made up throughout the program.

Parent/Guardian information sessions for the Late French Immersion Program (LFI) that will begin in September 2018 have been announced. As this program begins in Grade 7, these sessions are for parents/guardians of current Grade 6 students who are interested in learning more about the program.
